Big Train Clobber Giants

Wes Rea watching the ball as he crushes a 3-run HR.

On a beautiful Friday night, the Bethesda Big Train (26-6) took on the Gaithersburg Giants (14-16) in front of 614 fans.  Kit Scheetz (Virginia Tech) started the game for Bethesda and in six innings of work, gave up one run on four hits while striking out six batters.  The Big Train won 14-4 and have won four games in a row.

The Big Train took the lead in the first inning.  Stephen Alemais (Tulane) walked, and on a terrific hustle play, advanced from first base to third base on a groundout by Logan Farrar (Virginia Commonwealth).  Brandon Lowe (Maryland) proceeded to hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Alemais from third, giving the Big Train a 1-0 lead.

The Giants scored one run on two hits to tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the 2nd inning.

In the bottom of the 2nd, the powerful Big Train offense showed up.  Wes Rea (Mississippi State) led the inning off with a double and advanced to third on a sharp single up the middle by Cody Brown (Mississippi State).  After Ryne Willard (N.C. State) walked to load the bases, Tony DiLeo(Eastern Michigan) doubled to opposite field, scoring Rea and Brown.  Next batter, Logan Farrar, walked in Willard.  Brandon Lowe, then recorded his second and third RBI of the game on a broken bat single to right field.  To top the inning off, Wes Rea cleared the bases on a 3-run tater over the center field scoreboard, his third of the season, giving the Big Train a 9-1 lead.

The Big Train tacked on two more runs on a two RBI single by Andrew Brown (San Diego State) in the 4th inning.

In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Big Train pushed across one more run to put the score at 12-1.  Wes Rea walked to score Tony DiLeo, who walked to begin the inning.

In the 6th inning, Sean Labsan (Florida Atlantic) came in as a pinch hitter in the designated hitter spot, and clobbered a 1-1 pitch over the right center field wall for a two run dinger.  In limited action at the plate, Labsan has hit .391 on the season with three doubles and two home runs.  The Big Train led 14-1 through six innings.

In the remaining three innings the Giants scored three runs, but it was not enough to comeback against the explosive Big Train bats.

Notes: The Big Train scored 11 runs on 14 hits...Saturday Night the Big Train take on the Youse's Orioles at 7:30 at Shirley Povich Field.
